Why some rays change abruptly of path?

I don't think the ray really has changed path. If you look at the calorimeter (the green ring) something has dumped a load of energy (yellow blobs) right where the ray would have gone if it had continued straight. I think it's just the computer that has got a bit confused and thought that it went in a different direction.
